Compulsory English Preparatory Program Foreign Language Proficiency (Exemption) Exam - YYS
As stated in Article 9 of the Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University Regulation on Foreign Language Education and Examinations: “(1) A compulsory foreign language preparatory class shall be established for associate and undergraduate programs where instruction is conducted partially or entirely in a foreign language. Students enrolled in these programs are required to successfully complete the foreign language preparatory class, with the exception of those who pass the foreign language proficiency and/or placement exam or those who are exempt from the exam.”
Article 12 of the aforementioned regulation outlines the process regarding exemption from the Compulsory Preparatory Class: “(1) The foreign language proficiency of students admitted to university departments or programs requiring a compulsory preparatory class is assessed via a proficiency exam administered by the School of Foreign Languages. Students who achieve the required score on this exam are exempt from the preparatory class.” “(3) Two Proficiency Exams (YYS) are administered: one at the beginning and one at the end of the fall semester. At the end of the academic year, students take end-of-term exams. The eligibility criteria for the YYS are as follows: a) Students enrolled in associate or undergraduate programs where instruction is conducted partially or entirely in a foreign language, as well as students who failed or did not meet attendance requirements in the preparatory program during the previous academic year, take the YYS held at the beginning of the fall semester. b) Students who have fulfilled attendance requirements and achieved an in-term grade point average between 75 and 100 (85–100 for the Department of Translation and Interpreting) in the fall semester take the YYS held at the end of the fall semester.
(4) Students who pass the exam administered at the end of the fall semester may continue their associate, undergraduate, or graduate studies in the spring semester. (5) Proficiency and placement exams are also administered for students admitted via additional registration.” “(7) No make-up exams are granted for proficiency, placement, or end-of-term exams.”
Foreign Language Proficiency Exam and Implementation Principles
Article 12/A “(1) The format of the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (YYS)—which must be at a minimum level of B1+—is determined by the Board of the School of Foreign Languages. The YYS may be conducted in a single stage or in multiple stages. The exam assesses students' four fundamental skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). (2) To be considered successful in the YYS, a minimum score of 75 out of 100 is required. Students enrolled in the Translation and Interpreting Department must achieve a minimum score of 85 out of 100 on the YYS. (3) Students with a YYS score below 75 are deemed unsuccessful and are required to take a placement exam. Students in the Translation and Interpreting Department with a YYS score below 85 are deemed unsuccessful and are required to take a placement exam.” Exemption from the
Compulsory Preparatory Class
ARTICLE 13 “(1) Students whose situations are defined below are exempt from the compulsory foreign language preparatory class program: a) Those who participate in the proficiency exam held at the beginning of the academic year—due to their initial enrollment in a program—and score at least 75 points; or, for those initially enrolling in the Department of Translation and Interpreting, those who participate in the proficiency exam held at the beginning of the academic year and score at least 85 points. b) Those who have received their education in secondary education institutions attended by citizens of a country where the designated medium of instruction (foreign language) is spoken as the native language, and who have completed at least the final three years of their secondary education in such institutions. c) Those who obtain a score equivalent to at least 75 points—or, for the Department of Translation and Interpreting, equivalent to at least 85 points—on international foreign language exams recognized as equivalent to the central foreign language exams accepted by the Council of Higher Education. ç) University students who have successfully completed preparatory studies and subsequently enroll—via central horizontal transfer—in another department of the University that offers instruction partially or entirely in a foreign language. (2) Students exempt from the compulsory preparatory class shall not be admitted to the preparatory class and cannot claim a right to have their exemption scores declared invalid.” (3) To evaluate scores obtained from national or international foreign language exams accepted by ÖSYM, the exam validity period determined by the relevant administering institutions shall be taken as the basis. In cases where the validity period of the exam is not specified, the validity period determined by the Council of Higher Education shall apply.
