Objectives and Academic Programs of Our School
The objective of our School is to broaden our students' horizons regarding their foreign language learning vision, to equip them with the core foreign language skills essential for their professional careers, and to elevate their language competencies to an advanced level through our preparatory program.
Our School of Foreign Languages conducts Compulsory Foreign Language (within the scope of Article 5/ı), Vocational Foreign Language, and Elective Foreign Language courses across associate and undergraduate degree programs. These courses are delivered at various proficiency levels and structures to associate and undergraduate students enrolled in the faculties, schools, and vocational schools affiliated with our University:
-
I. Compulsory Foreign Language Courses
-
II. Vocational Foreign Language Courses
Purpose of the Foreign Language Preparatory Program
The purpose of the Foreign Language Preparatory Program is to teach students the fundamental rules of the foreign language required by their respective academic programs. It aims to develop their skills in reading and listening comprehension, as well as written and oral self-expression. Furthermore, the program equips students with the necessary communication skills for professional and social life, enabling them to track academic publications in their respective fields.
Compulsory Preparatory Class
Between 1998 and 2014, English language education was provided to all students of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences through a one-year compulsory preparatory program. Currently, this is a one-year (two-semester) English education program designed for students who enroll in departments where the medium of instruction is at least 30% English and who fail the Proficiency Exam.
Upon completion of this program, students are expected to reach at least a B1+ proficiency level. Candidates who fail the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam at the end of the academic year are required to attend the preparatory class for at least one additional semester and pass the exam. Students who fail to pass the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (YYS) within two years must transfer and register to a university where the medium of instruction is 100% Turkish.
As of the respective academic years, the following English-medium departments have been established, and students enrolled in these programs are required to receive one year of compulsory English preparatory education:
-
2020 - 2021: Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences – Department of Computer Engineering (English)
-
2021 - 2022: Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences – Department of Economics (English)
-
2022 - 2023: Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – Department of Translation and Interpreting (English)
-
2023 - 2024: Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences – Department of Business Administration (English)
-
2023 - 2024: Maritime Faculty – Department of Marine Transportation Engineering (English)
Examination and Placement Procedures
Students who wish to do so may take the Proficiency (Exemption) Exam before the start of the Fall Semester. Those who succeed by scoring 75 or above (a score of 85 or above is required for the Department of English Translation and Interpreting) are exempted from the preparatory program and proceed directly to the first grade. Non-exempt students must take the Placement Exam and are placed into sections according to their scores.
Students placed in the preparatory class receive 20 to 30 hours of instruction per week. Course hours may vary depending on the proficiency level of the assigned section. If necessary, student redistribution across sections may be reorganized at the end of the Fall Semester based on an examination or continuous assessment results throughout the term.
For detailed information regarding class attendance, assessment, evaluation, and other requirements in the Compulsory Preparatory Class, please review the BANU Foreign Language Education and Examination Regulations. The regulations can be accessed via the "Regulations" link under the "Student" menu on our website.
Compulsory Foreign Language Courses (General)
Additionally, the academic staff of our School delivers compulsory, elective, and vocational foreign language courses across faculties and vocational schools affiliated with our University.
The Department of Foreign Languages provides the compulsory foreign language (English) education mandated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) decisions across all faculties and vocational schools of our University. These courses aim to develop students' core grammar and vocabulary competencies alongside their listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. Moreover, through vocational foreign language courses required by certain undergraduate programs, students are prepared to communicate effectively in English within their professional careers.
